Creative Drinks caught up with cinematographer Brad Francis to interview him about what inspires him and his place in the creative scene.
Brad Francis’ work is photographic based mixed media. Using specialized technique, he explores the sense of connectivity within seclusion, our fundamental basis for existence and our longing for longevity. Brad studied at the North Adelaide School of Art through the late 90’s and has worked professionally within the Australian Film Industry for the last 15 years. Brad is a professional cinematographer whose work varies from music videos, to dramatic films and TVC’s, to documentaries. Follow his work at: www.singlesuntheory.com
CD: How did you get into art?
Brad: I have always been an image creator, I studied visual arts after I left school in the 90’s but then started working in the film industry where I have formed my career as a cinematographer. I have been practicing my own artistic photographic projects on the side, but it has only been this year where all the elements have come together. The right creative ideas, my previous experience and random opportunities have brought me to this point.
CD: What inspires you?
Brad: I think inspiration and creativity is like a river, it flows and there’s no way you can stop it when it’s running, but I’m human, on a good day everything I lay my eyes on will inspire me, and on a bad day I could be standing in the Louvre and be bored (actually I’ve never been, and I don’t think I could ever be bored there, but you get my point).
CD: Favourite art piece?
Brad: I love so many things, the street photography of Vivian Maier is something that inspires me.
CD: What do you think of Brisbane’s creative scene?
Brad: I’m only new to the scene, but now that my eyes have been opened I’m surprised about the depth of it, inspired really, interested to discover more.
CD: If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be?
Brad: Very difficult question, but I think someone like the Cubist / Dada artist Marcel Duchamp would be a hell of a lot of fun to collaborate with.
CD: What is your dream job/future aspirations?
Brad: My dream future is 2 fold, I want to have a solo exhibition in a few years and be recognized as an ‘artist’. Professionally, as a cinematographer I want to have shot a film with cinema distribution within the next 5 years, not too much to ask really, I’m on my way.
CD: What is your favourite TV show?
Brad: This is easy. Recently, I have been captivated by True Detective, and Utopia (Uk series). I think I’m the only one on this planet that doesn’t like Game of Thrones.
CD: Can you give us 3 words you would use to describe your work?
Brad: Delicate, timeless, calm.
CD: What are 3 words your friends would use to describe you?
Brad: Chaotic, solid, ridiculous.
