Try something new at Nundah's Tapioca Garden

Try something new at Nundah’s Tapioca Garden

| On 21, Sep 2016

Tapioca Garden is Australia’s first tapioca bar with dairy free, gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options that everyone can enjoy.

Opened late last month in Nundah, the newly revitalised community project café boasts a menu that is jam-packed with nutrients for health and well-being. Started by two interior design students, Juliana Ribeiro and Paige Hodkinson, the café was opened on a miniscule budget with the help and donations from the local community.

Now that they are open, they aim to give back to the community by showcasing local Brisbane artists’ work on their walls, offering student discounts and specials for local Nundah Village workers, as well as monthly charity donations.

Their main ingredient, tapioca, is a superfood that is extracted from the Brazilian cassava root and can be found in all the dishes on their menu. You can start your day with one of the tapioca or crepioca dishes which are numbered in Portuguese and pair it with a lovely Campos coffee or Origin tea. I had the Numero Cinco; a savoury tapioca crepe filled with scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms, fresh tomatoes and cheddar cheese. The filling was super tasty and the starchy texture of the tapioca made for an interesting and refreshing eat.

Tapioca Garden also offers bagels, salads, and acai bowls. I had a bite of my friend’s big brekky bagel which had crispy bacon rashers, sausage, egg, tasty cheddar, sliced tomato, and pepper relish that was equally as satisfying and filling!

We finished off our meal with a sweet crepioca which filled with grilled bananas, cinnamon, and served with vanilla ice-cream and maple syrup. Crepioca is a sweet alternative to the tapioca dishes and is essentially sweet tapioca with the addition of eggs and cream cheese. The result is a fluffy, crepe-like treat that can also come with strawberries and Nutella- practically healthy!

If you are in the area, or think it’s worth the trip alone, Tapioca Garden is a must try for their unique take on common dishes. A walk across the green carpet, under the pot plants and shrubs that are hanging from the ceiling delivers you to guilt-free dessert and treats galore!
