A modern day fairytale at NEXT Hotel

A modern day fairytale at NEXT Hotel

| On 05, Mar 2015

I have stayed in enough hotel rooms to have a very strong love-hate relationship with them. There are those who welcome you with 1000 thread count sheets and wait staff at the ready, room service, spas and all the trimmings and then there are those less worthy. But Next Hotel right in the heart of Brisbane city goes beyond the usual affair of what is often a sterile environment. Welcome to the modern day hotel…

For the introverts among us, or those allergic to small talk or any kind of social interaction, NEXT Hotel’s easy self check-in will have you melt in a world of happiness. There are three ways to check-in at this fine establishment. The usual face to face old school check-in at the counter, the self check in at the computer terminals or pre check in by simply downloading the Next Hotel app and clicking ‘Check-in’. I told you this was a modern affair. It’s all designed to make your time count.

This app is fantastic. You can control everything from your phone. And don’t panic, if for some unthinkable reason you are without a smartphone each room is equipped with a Samsung Galaxy for your complete use. You can take it with you wherever you go and the best thing – it works as a wifi hotspot, so free internet for you all! I felt like a child in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, I sat on my beautifully comfy bed and controlled everything from my phone. Actually maybe I felt more like some kind of god. You can control the television, the air conditioning, order room service, turn on your do not disturb light, and control all the lights in the room. You can set your alarm and have the option of turning on all your lights to wake you up, even the television. The novelty did not wear off. And that’s when I realised, this isn’t a novelty at all, it’s something so simple yet the first of its’ kind. Controlling everything from an app is pure convenience and something that makes this hotel superior. You can be wondering the city and suddenly crave a burger, never fear, just pull out your phone order it for room service and it will be waiting for you when you get back.

The rooms themselves are a breath of fresh air. They are modern spaces with open bathrooms – don’t panic, you have the ability to close off the bathroom with the hidden sliding doors, it’s all very chic darlings. There’s complimentary robes and thongs for the pool and gorgeously intriguing views of Brisvegas.

NEXT believes in the honesty of humans. So each guest is entitled to four free items from the minibar each day of their stay. Yes! Absolutely free. And on level four in the club lounge – don’t get fooled by the title, this room is for any guest staying at the hotel, there are fridges filled with snacks and drinks, you take it and it becomes your responsibility to select the correct item on the tablet and charge it to your room. Again it’s all about doing things as you like and not having to deal with other people, if that’s what floats you boat. All this being said staff members like any good hotel establishment are the epitome of service at your beck and call.

The Club Lounge is a gorgeously welcoming space filled with comfy chairs, workspaces, computers, a library and just around the corner is the in-transit lounge. A clever term for where the SLEEPING PODS live. I have seen these things in mere photos in the Google offices and sighed at the sad fact I would never nap in one and yet here I was in the centre of Queen St Mall taking a 20 minute nap is this futuristic piece of equipment I like to call heaven. You set the time you want to nap, you have a choice of music and a selection of lights and it will slowly wake you up. They are the first sleeping pods in Brisbane and are a truly wonderful part of the hotel. If you arrive a little early it’s absolutely fine, no need to head out or find a random place to wait, head to the sleeping pods or the club lounge.

There’s also a swanky roof top bar, also opened to the public. With gorgeous views of the mall from a perspective that is both intriguing and breathtaking, this is one of those bars where you expect to meet a handsome stranger. Right in the centre sits a gorgeous pool and the cocktails are a thing of beauty. They have just started Friday ‘Pooltini’ nights – Latino themed nights, so get your samba on because this roof comes alive with the passion of the Spanish.

Head down to level one for the hotel’s restaurant Lennons. This space is just divine and the food is far beyond the usual hotel buffet or standard meat and three veg. Head Chef Todd Adams is a genius, whipping up gorgeous seasonal and creative menus that will have you going back for more. The dinner menu is all about fresh, modern flavours. Entrees are light and packed full of flavour, I absolutely loved the fresh salmon and delicate crab with avocado and all things insanely amazing. For mains, think succulent lamb with gorgeous roast pumpkin, perfectly cook sirloin, fresh pastas and drool worthy desserts.

Come morning the breakfast menu is a sight to behold. The selection ranges from light as well as more traditional big breakfast style meals and some of the best coffee I have ever had. I opted for the gorgeous fresh salmon with poached eggs and potato hash and it was poached egg porn central! Delicious!

Did I mention this is the first of its’ kind in the world. This fancy, ground breaking, modern hotel chose to plant its’ roots in humble old Brisbane. Who said Brisbane wasn’t up and coming!? Although this place is perfect for the important businessmen, it ticks all the boxes for any traveller in search of a luxurious stay in a central location with amenities unlike any other standard run of the mill hotel chain.

My verdict: I have nothing but praise for this new, innovative and welcoming hotel. This is the kind of hotel I see Disney princesses singing and dancing in, it’s the kind of place I see the businessman being able to take a load off and leisure in his own time, it’s the place for the traveller in search of convenience and a little luxury. NEXT is what Brisbane has been missing, a modern space, filled with comfortable spaces, smart technology and a restaurant far beyond the beige. So if you are looking for a hotel designed to relax you and prioritise convenience, efficiency and a sense of style then NEXT is the hotel for you.
