If you’ve made a tour of the local theatres, but still find yourself wanting more; or if you’ve got a great venue you’d love to fill with performance, Brisbane’s Anywhere Theatre Festival is for you!

We are undoubtedly a city rich in festivals and events, but Anywhere is a gathering with a real difference. Its shows encompass practically everything, from traditional theatre, to cabaret, to comedy, to dance, but they are brought together by a shared celebration of the non-traditional. As the name suggests, the festival’s productions take place, well, anywhere. Anywhere, that is, apart from dedicated theatrical venues. Cafes, bars, museums, backyards—Anywhere puts them all to use, giving emerging creatives and companies a chance to spread their wings and fly all across the city.

A Dream Play

A Dream Play

Born out of the desire to break free of expensive and exclusionary theatre-hire systems and unprofitable fringe festivals, Anywhere premiered in Brisbane in 2011. Over the past four years, the festival has been a champion of accessible, affordable and quality theatre, and supportive, connected and collaborative creative communities. Now, in 2015, Anywhere has expanded its work to Mackay, Parramatta and Frankston, drawing not only local artists, but talent from as far as Norway, the UK, Spain and North America to its events.

Obviously a tremendous opportunity for creatives and communities alike, Anywhere is also a real boon for audiences. With few tickets priced over $20, the move away from traditional spaces means a great influx of edgy, eccentric and wonderfully cheap shows flooding the city each year.

The multitude of unique venues also provides new and exciting opportunities to blend script with setting. Last year’s Drunk Shakespeare taking place on the top floor of the Fox Hotel was as fitting as it was hilarious; this year, those of us who first encountered The Apology as part of the high-school theatre curriculum/anti-bullying charter can view the play in its actual setting at Boggo Road Gaol.

Alternately, if you’re the owner or manager of a cool space that could use a little jazzing up, why not volunteer to host a performance? It’s a great way to tap into the vibrant underground culture of the city, and also not a bad method of stealing a bit of business away from the QPAC/Southbank megaplex currently slurping up most of the city’s cultural spending.

Anywhere Theatre Festival is talent at its raw, anarchical best. Eschewing the theatre system opens up a wealth of opportunities for performances, audiences, and local businesses alike. Tickets for the Brisbane leg are on sale now, so get in while you can to be a part of this amazing city-wide event.
