Aw yeah, Au Cirque

This little cafe in New Farm is a big deal.
Au Cirque has been a favourite for as long as I can remember.
Something about this popularity always made me hesitant to visit, this and the 45 minute wait for a table on weekends.
However, curiosity got the better of me this week and I decided a casual Monday morning would be the perfect time to finally check it out.
The obligatory pre-meal coffees were delivered and devoured before I selected the sweet corn fritters with bacon and relish.
The vego chowdown was also ordered after much deliberation.
While these dishes both feature on the standard menu, the specials are worth an honourable mention.
As a lover of unusual food combinations (especially of the sweet & salty kind), it was extremely difficult to pass up the hotcakes with roasted tomatoes, balsamic onions and sea salt ice cream!
However, the corn fritters quickly had me forgetting about everything else.
Plump, fluffy and moist, with plenty of corn filling, these fritters were some of the best I have ever had (the majority of fritters tend to be dry and floury).
I would definitely recommend adding the bacon & relish. The bacon provided a nice savoury contrast and the relish added a nice warmth with a very mild spice.
The vego chowdown, which consists of avocado, roast tomato, mushrooms, potato and parmesan rosti, onion jam and sourdough, was also excellent.
Fresh and tasty ingredients made the classic dish stand out.
Our service was also above average, with constant service that ensured our water was always full and our table empty of any bare (polished clean) plates.
It’s so nice when somewhere lives up to your expectations and Au Cirque did that, and more.
It’s official, I regret not going sooner.
