Breakfast at the Paleo Café Paddington

Breakfast at the Paleo Café Paddington

| On 12, Apr 2014

Whether you follow the Paleo diet or not, the Paleo Café in Paddington offers a delicious range of breakfast dishes to satisfy everyone’s tastebuds.

Choosing where to go for breakfast is a difficult decision, especially in the breakfast hub of Paddington. Do we try some place new? Or do we stick to a café we know and love?

Last week a friend and I were in this very position and after some hunger-fuelled indecision we decided to try somewhere new. Not being Paleo but having heard a lot about it, we walked in the Paleo Café and were glad we did.

As you would expect, the Paleo Café’s menu adheres to the Paleo Diet; that is, their menu is gluten-free, grain-free, refined sugar-free and dairy-free. But don’t think that they’re serving cardboard on a plate.

As my friend and I studied the breakfast dishes on offer we were delighted to see your typical breakfast favourites: breakfast parfait, Bircher muesli, pancakes, poached eggs and avocado on toast, a Big Breakfast, plus more. After some ‘ooohs’ we decided on one sweet and one savoury: the banana pancakes ($15) and the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon ($20).

In addition to your standard coffees and teas, the Paleo café offers a variety of super healthy (and tasty) smoothies and fresh fruit juices. My breakfast buddy ordered an almond milk cappuccino ($3.50) and I daringly went for the green smoothie ($7.50). Our drinks came out promptly and I’m happy to say that the smoothie was refreshing, sweet and didn’t taste like spinach-flavoured dirt.

Not long after our drinks arrived, a friendly waitress brought us our meals. My banana pancakes, accompanied by a berry compote and whipped coconut cream, were delicious. And because sharing is caring, my compadre and I swapped dishes halfway. The Eggs Benedict was equally as tasty and passed the ultimate breakfast test: perfectly runny poached eggs. The one criticism I do have is with the toast. Devoid of gluten and grains, the bread was quite thin and crumbly. Nevertheless, we left the café with big smiles and satisfied bellies.

With its fast and friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and delicious food, the Paleo Café is a place to add to your list of great Paddington breakfast spots.
