Brisbane Venue Guide

| On 20, Jul 2017

On the hunt for a new venue to hit up? Look no further, here’s your very own guide on some of Brisbane’s hottest gig spots…

Black Bear Lodge:
322 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley

This is a cosy gem of a venue hidden away up a staircase in Brunswick Street mall. It has an insanely inviting atmosphere and almost feels as though you are stepping into a 90’s episode of Twin Peaks. Black Bear Lodge is for anyone who loves to experience those more intimate gigs, with a variety of genres primarily including indie, folk and jazz.

Capacity: Approximately 250 people

Some artists who have performed there: Woodes, The Art of Sleeping, Sahara Beck, Clea, Daggy Man, Dean Lewis and Major Leagues

The Woolly Mammoth:
633 Ann St, Fortitude Valley

Although this venue is named after a prehistoric creature, it is by no means cold or old. The Woolly Mammoth is constantly buzzing with energetic performances from a variety of local artists. It facilitates genres such as punk, rock, metal, DJ sets and indie artists. If you’re into craft beer on tap and plenty of room to get dancing, then this is definitely the venue for you. They also do some killer tribute nights and are always a key venue in Brisbane’s Mountain Goat Valley Crawl.

Capacity: 200-600 depending on what floor you are on (downstairs or upstairs)

Some artists who have performed there: Methel Ethyl, Fight Ibis, Amy Shark, Ocean Grove, Gang of Youths and Thelma Plum

The Foundry:
228 Wickham St, Fortitude Valley

The Foundry is a funky, multi-faceted venue with a labyrinth of areas and corridors to get lost in. There’s a main stage area, dance floor, deck, bar and a few ‘back rooms’ for smaller gigs. This venue hosts a diverse range of artists including the odd funk and disco set. If you enjoy getting your groove on under some coloured lights then this may just be the space for you!

Capacity: 400 in the main area

Some artists who have performed there: Cub Sport, Golden Vessel, Flowertruck, The Jungle Giants and Clea

The Tivoli:
52 Costin St, Fortitude Valley

The Tivoli is one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues, with a stunning old time feel that never fails to evoke a sense of nostalgia. It’s the go to site for artists that require the space to facilitate a bit of a larger crowd. If you enjoy the atmosphere of a packed-out crowd accompanied by some beautiful architecture then this is a ‘must go’ venue. 2017 is actually the building’s 100th anniversary!

Capacity: 700 (seated) and 1500 standing

Some artists who have performed there: Bob Dylan, Powderfinger, Paul Kelly, Nick Cave, San Cisco, Boy and Bear, Dope Lemon and San Cisco.

These are just some of the venues that form an integral part of Brisbane’s close knit creative community. Whether you’re looking for gigs from your favourite upcoming artists or are an artist yourself, these are the prime places to be!

Next time we look at some venues outside of the Fortitude Valley scene.
