Brisbane's Best Record Stores
Adrien Van Bruinessen | On 09, Jan 2015
What once was old is now new again, with musos and hipsters alike scouring record stores in the hopes of finding a gem to add to their collection, and in turn, their vintage cred. With compact discs becoming perpetually uncool, and the only way to obtain your favourite tunes being either online or on vinyl, we have chosen the best record stores in Brisbane for all your listening pleasure.
79 Vulture Street, West End
This place means business. No hipster-muso-wannabe can fool these dudes. They offer more than your usual reissue of The Beatles. Filled with records from all decades and genres, Egg Records is the place for the serious music enthusiast. Complete with unique band posters, tees and classic collector memorabilia from bygone eras, you will never leave Egg Records empty handed, or without having an awesomely in depth chat about every band under the sun with one of the super chilled-out and passionate staff.
Level 1, Shop 2064A, 1151 Creek Road, Westfield, Carindale
Expect to lose hours here. This place has a healthy selection of both recent and old school albums, but ensure you have saved your pennies for your trip, as they can be quite pricey. Conveniently placed in one of Brisbane’s biggest shopping centres, you can give your fingers a break from flicking through the titles while you grab a coffee or check out the sales at other stores. Rockaway Records also has posters and keepsakes that appeal to both the older and younger generations.
The Record Exchange
Level 1, 65 Adelaide Street, Queen Street Mall, Brisbane
How lucky we are to have Australia’s biggest record store right in our backyard. Offering a massive selection of new and pre-loved records as well as some quirky memorabilia and tees, it is no wonder The Record Exchange is one of Brisbane’s silent icons. You may need to allocate an entire day to spend in this store. Take your mates and make a day of it.
A dishonourable mention goes to Rockinghorse Records on Albert Street in the city. Just quietly, the selection was disappointing, the staff need to relearn the alphabet and maybe even feign some interest in the records that they are selling.
Happy hunting guys and rock on!
