Brisbane's Shade Cinema

While Queensland has been denounced from being the ‘Smart State’, we will always be the ‘Sunshine State’.
Brisbanites love to get their fair share of vitamin D, but it is often to the detriment of their health.
To help combat health issues associated with Brisbane’s Summer sun, the Brisbane City Council is not only encouraging to slip, slop and slap, but has created a new and innovative way to have fun outdoors.
This comes in the form of a smartphone application, the Shade Cinema.
The free Shade Cinema app allows you to stream movies on an iPhone or Android device while accessing free Wi-Fi available in many Brisbane’s parks.
I know what you’re thinking; free app, free wifi and free movies – too good to be true!
Well yes, there is a catch.
Your free movie will only play if you are in the shade.
The app uses the smartphones in built light detectors to measure the phone’s exposure to the sun.
Move into the sun and your movie will pause, move back into the shade and it will resume. Simple.
Brisbane’s Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, explains that “The Shade Cinema event is another way we are building our reputation as a digital city while also inviting residents to enjoy our beautiful green parks in a healthy, sun-smart wayâ€.
The app launched in iconic New Farm Park in 2013 and can be used in 22 of Brisbane’s parks and public spaces.
A little contradictory, I know, but it’s time to get out in Brisbane’s beautiful summer weather and watch a movie.
