Cabaret Coming Soon To The Judith Wright Centre

Cabaret Coming Soon To The Judith Wright Centre

| On 13, Jan 2015

If you’ve been itching to see some good cabaret or burlesque, then the Judith Wright Centre is sure to start your year off with a bang with a bumper lineup of Australia’s best acts coming in February and March.

You may have often walked down Brunswick St without noticing the “Judy”. It’s not quite as demanding of attention from the outside as other Brisbane fixtures like QPAC or the Powerhouse, and with its cool, dark tinted windows it’s easy to forget it’s there at all – we’ve often been left kicking ourselves after missing out on seeing some of the best national acts on offer. Here’s a list of what’s up next so you don’t forget!

Barbara and Barry’s Sweet, Sour and Saucy

A night in with Barbara and Barry could be the perfect early Valentine’s gift for your better half, though we warn you – things might get a bit rude.

Playing for three nights only, uniquely Australian “vintage ocker musical duo” Barbara and Barry (Melissa Western and Tnee Dyer) bring fresh light on classic love songs by artists such as Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith and Nat King Cole. Armed with a grand piano, a ukulele, and the vague promise of a washboard, a kazoo erotic spoons, they will stage a 50s talk radio love show in the Performance Theatre in a show that promises laughs as well as impressive musical expertise.

The fun can begin from the comfort of your very own lounge room, as you can request a song or “phone in” with a love issue for the canny pair to solve at this link as long as you specify the performance you’ll be attending.

Hot Brown Honey Burlesque

If you liked the cheeky cabaret Briefs for its over-the top antics and sass, then Hot Brown Honey Burlesque is a must-see to rival the colourful troupe of cabaret boys as it takes to the Judy’s Performance Theatre in March. Billing itself as a “satirical, sensual, political mess”, the show is devised and performed by stellar creatives Busty Beatz, Lisa Fa’alafi and Candy B. Hot Brown Honey Burlesque arose in 2010 as a fiery response to the lack of diversity on the burlesque stages, dissecting what it means to be a brown, black or mixed lady through a host of outrageous scenarios and characters.

“We are the latest models of our ancestry,” their website proudly states. “This is our truth, our stories, our voices, our bodies.”

Nothing is safe from the razor-sharp wit of the trio, as they take aim at politics, social stereotypes, and the very genre of burlesque through a smorgasboard of poetry, circus, comedy, dance and striptease. You may find yourself shifting in your seat in throes of both pleasure and discomfort throughout the evening as they smash the patriarchy with an uncensored, confrontational cavalcade of style, grace and humour.
