Recently opened in the corner of Smith Street and Queens Parade in the trendy Fitzroy, Charlie’s restaurant offers gourmet cuisine.

Housed in a Victorian building from 1870, Charlie’s is a charming place where you will feel immediately comfortable and welcomed. Decorated with red brick walls and wood, the atmosphere is extremely warm and tranquil.

Named after the children’s owners, Charlie, the restaurant aims to be familial and casual. “We want people to be comfortable when they come in our restaurant”, says Katherine, the owner. “Charlie’s is family oriented, we like to have children around. Our aim is to mix cultures, both in the kitchen and the restaurant itself”.

And it is pretty well accomplished, especially in the kitchen. For breakfast and lunch, the cuisine is Australian focused but don’t hesitate to try out some unique dishes like their spiced chicken breast, avocado, bacon, aioli and tasty cheese in a Turkish roll or their Charlie’s Beef Burger with caramelised red onion, crispy bacon, avocado, brie and pesto on a toasted brioche bun.

But the cuisine changes into a European English style at dinner time. After spending few years in a four star hotel in England, talented head chef Andy Bedford proposes a sophisticated dinner menu full of flavours. You’ll find a delicious eye fillet steak with Dauphinoise potato, King Oyster Mushrooms, Oven Roasted Tomatoes & Pan Juices or their most popular dish: their Spiced Kangaroo Loin, Confit Garlic Mash, Green Beans wrapped in Pancetta & Glazed Carrots.

With a large selection of drinks, the restaurant mainly serves local wines from the Yarra Valley and the Margaret River but also offers international ones like the French Sauvignon Blanc or the sparkly white from Tuscany.

Charlie’s also proposes degustation nights with five courses and matching wines to initiate their customers into diverse flavours. A good opportunity to taste and discover new savours.

“We are more a restaurant than a cafe” says Katherine. It might be right, but their coffee and breakfast is excellent, as well as their lunch. So don’t be afraid to try Charlie’s at any time of the day to discover the goodness.
