Chilliwow Opens in Brisbane

Lyneta Darlington

Please welcome the newest contender to Brisbane’s Mexican food wrestling match! Competing against some already established names, this bright young upstart has what it takes to shake up the game. Quite literally too, they have shaker fries!

It seems that Brisbane can’t get enough of Mexican lately, with numerous restaurants popping up all over town. But new kid on the block, Chilliwow, looks like they are bringing something a little different arena.

An explosion of colour, the Chilliwow crew has turned the once somber Barsoma into an extravagant Mexican playground complete with skulls, cacti, candles, portraits of Frida Kahlo, projections of axolotls and the occasional mariachi band.

While the menu may be limited to the shaker fries, tacos and chillidogs, the ingredients are fresh and delicious. Plus, the bar serves up a mean selection of Mexican beers, tequila and cocktails that are enough to get any crowd cheering.  There’s plenty of room to dine, with booths lining the exposed brick walls and extra seating upstairs and outside. So bring some friends along to help you sample every kind of taco!

Word of warning though, each table is stocked with a few extra imported Mexican salsas and they really pack a punch. As someone not afraid of a little spice, I gave the exxxtra hot picante salsa a go. Chilli, wow! I think my tongue is still feeling a little tender.
