The Craft Coven - opening this Saturday

Failed Home Ec? Still want to create beautiful things? Thanks to new Ashgrove workshop hub “The Craft Coven”, it’s never been easier.
“Home Ec in high school was terrible,” says Alice Nightingale, half of the brains behind new community venture The Craft Coven. Brisbane-based Alice has long since made a name for herself with her range of handmade vintage-inspired womenswear. Now, along with fellow local creative, baking extraordinaire and “alchemist’ Stella Winlaw, she’s spent the last few months knocking an Ashgrove house into shape to be the new home for weekly craft and knitting meetings. For the many of us who received generous C-minuses on our high school pillowcases, this venture is just what we’ve been waiting for.
The Coven was partly an initiative to bring a much-needed creative boost to Northside suburbia, taking some pressure off nearby trendy venue the Junk Bar (which is super close by if you fancy an afternoon of craft and cocktails!). Classes run weekly and start from $10, including block printing, arm knitting, pattern making and sewing. Beginner, intermediate and advanced classes will be available in groups and one-on-one.
A short conversation with the pair reveals countless plans for fun afternoons at the cozy Ashgrove nook, decorated down to the last inch with vintage bric-a-brac and cozy couches. Alice and Stella plan on focusing not just the on creative side but the community aspect as well. Their schemes include movie-themed craft days (think X-Files and Wizard of Oz), “Bring A Familiar” (sewing clothes for your furry friend) and charity crafts, making toys for children in need around Christmas time.
“Halloween’s going to be a pretty big time for us here,” says Alice.
The Craft Coven kicks off its classes this Saturday with a launch party and garage sale event from 9am, with live music, a shop featuring seconds, sale items, vintage and pre-loved items for sale, tasty baked treats and mini-workshops in the afternoon (bookings essential).
