Creative Drinks Presents The Spring Fling: Milena Jovanovich
Melinda Lyons | On 17, Sep 2014
Creative Drinks caught up with Milena, to discuss everything art!
Originally from San Francisco, Milena has found her way to Brisbane, via Italy, only to be continually impressed by what the world has to offer through its diverse cultures, arts, foods, people, and nature.  While living in Italy she was particularly taken with the Slow Food movement which supports local food cultures and traditions; It is this philosophy that has influenced her photographic work to explore and emphasise the beauty and idiosyncrasies of the earth’s plants, animals, and fungi while bringing into question issues of biodiversity, sustainability, and localisation vs globalisation.
CD: How did you get into art?
Milena: I’ve always been drawn to art since I was a child. However, when I was 16 I took a photography course at school where I got to work in a dark room and use a 35mm film camera. It was an incredible experience that I am so thankful for. That was really the turning point for me. After that I always had some sort of a camera with me and a couple of photo shoot ideas in mind.
CD: What inspires you?
Milena: The natural world, new cultures and foods, and the everyday magic moments that often go unnoticed.
CD: If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be?
Milena: Robert Mapplethorpe. I wouldn’t even have to collaborate, I would love just be his assistant for a day to learn his technique. That would be incredible.
CD: What do you think of Brisbane’s creative scene?
Milena: I am still relatively new to Brisbane’s creative scene, but of what I can tell it is definitely growing quickly and there is a lot to explore!
CD: What is your dream job/future aspirations?
Milena: Ideally, I would like to be a full time photographer with my own studio, shooting food and travel with some art photography on the side.
CD: What is your favourite TV show?
Milena: Game of Thrones.
CD: Favourite art piece?
Milena: Thomas, 1987 Robert Mapplethorpe, or The bag-piper, 1514 Albrecht Durer
CD: Can you give us 3 words you would use to describe your work?
Milena: Imaginative, minimal, organic.
CD: What are 3 words your friends would use to describe you?
Milena: Whimsical, insightful, and delicious. Apparently all I ever talk about is good food and so my friends said I remind them of the word delicious. Not sure if that’s good or bad!!
CD: Can you come up with a Creative Drink title that best describes you and your art and then draw your favourite Creative Drink?
Milena: Salt and Soil!
