The Queensland Theatre Company’s (QTC) Creative Development Series currently underway; its a terrific way for theatre goers to step backstage and find out what really happens behind-the-scenes of a stage production.

Bull

“Creative Development is how we cultivate and nurture the next generation of projects,” explains
QTC’s Artistic Director Wesley Enoch.

A new work is placed under the microscope each night.

Trollop by Maxine Mellor won the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2012-13. On the 12th of April, Enoch will give audiences their first glimpse of the play. The creative team will also share how they plan to bring Mellor’s ambitious vision to life on stage.

Shortly after, the Bille Brown Studio will play host to a play reading and development showing of the new work, Bull. Written by ‘Kelly’ playwright Matthew Ryan, the dark comedy follows Queen Pasiphae and her curious (sexual) desire for a lover of the *ahem* bovine kind.

With a stellar cast lead by Eugene Gilfedder, Hugh Parker and Melanie Zanetti, audiences will find out on the 19th of April whether the Queen’s bull-lust is destined to become bull-dust.

Of course, the Development Series is more than simply work-shopping new pieces; Enoch believes its about getting the spectator actively involved in the creative process.

“We invite everyone to come along and experience this program,” he says, “it’s important we have great audiences.”

Feedback is both welcomed and encouraged. After each session, guests are given the opportunity to enjoy a glass of bubbly and meet directly with members of QTC in a relaxed atmosphere. With tickets going from as little a $5 (and yes, that includes a drink), a fun night out seems guaranteed!

QTC’s Creative Development Series ends on the 20th of April. This is your opportunity to share your thoughts and help contribute to the growth of Brisbane’s performing arts landscape in 2013.

Who knows? Perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to watch your ideas brought to life on stage.
