Do you have RAW talent? Brisbane's Newest Indie Arts Organisation

Ratu Lewis

RAW LogoWe want to introduce you to the newest creative organisation that has hit Brisbane – RAW. It is an indie arts organisation for artists by artists. Their mission is to provide independent artists within the first 10 years of their career with the tools, resources and exposure needed to inspire and cultivate creativity.

RAW is coming from the U.S. where it has expanded to over 50 cities over the past three years and is now looking to take the concept internationally. And you guys should consider yourself lucky because Brisbane is the first international city to hold RAW (finally someone who realises our city has something to offer too!).

The way it works is that they hand pick and spotlight local artistic talent in film, fashion, music, visual art, photography, hair, makeup and performing art on their website and showcase their work at their monthly events.

Kristen Wehlow, the Executive Director of RAW Australia has lived and travelled to many countries, where she has drawn inspiration from the creative people of Asia to Europe to the Americas. Now back in my home country she is the head of the RAW Australia team and organises, promotes and creates opportunities for emerging artists in Brisbane through RAW’s monthly showcases. We recently talked to Kristen to find out about these showcases…

CD: Who is RAW for?

KRISTEN: RAW is for everyone! For the artists it provides opportunities and pathways to exhibit and share their creative talents. For the public it’s a fantastic fun night of entertainment and a chance to discover a multitude of creative talent in their hometown.

CD: What are the benefits for artists submitting their work?

KRISTEN: Emerging artists often don’t have the means, framework or resources to move their talents from the bedroom to the public eye. RAW creates a platform for them to do this. We provide a passionate audience, an opportunity for them to show their work and ongoing promotion within the industry.

CD: What makes RAW different?

KRISTEN: RAW was created by artists for artists. Rather than providing an exhibition or show for established talent, we’re here to uncover the emerging artists through a showcase format unlike any other in Brisbane.

CD: How many events have already taken place in Brisbane? How successful have they been?

KRISTEN: Two shows both sold out! Our third show is on Wednesday, 29th August.

CD: How is the event set up on the night? Do attendees sit down and watch showcase after showcase or is it set up like an exhibition, where people walk around and view exhibits?

KRISTEN: The night is an ongoing interactive event. Attendees can explore the wealth of visual artist talent throughout the venue interspersed with performing artists, live music, fashion shows and film.

CD: What will the event RADIATE be all about?

KRISTEN: Once again we have a fantastic showcase packed with a vast array of talented artists across many genres. Expect a captivating dance performance from S.E.A., a fun-filled indie pop set from The Roshambos and gaze upon powerful images from photographer Danni Ogilvie, and that’s just a taste!

CD: What are you looking forward to for the upcoming event?

KRISTEN: We always take great joy in seeing how the public react to our artists and performances. From people finding new tracks to add to their playlists, buying their first piece of art or becoming inspired themselves to bring their own talents to a future RAW showcase.

CD: How do events differ from month to month? Can artists be showcased at more than one event?

KRISTEN: Each month brings a new batch of Brisbane’s finest emerging talent. Artists that have showcased before have the chance to go on and showcase in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York City.

CD: Other than submitting their work and attending the events, what other ways can people be involved in RAW?

KRISTEN: RAW is about supporting your local arts community. Just buying a ticket to a RAW showcase already goes a long way to incubating and promoting our emerging artists. For those who wish to do more buy a piece of art or a band’s record at the show, encourage a local boutique to stock one of our emerging designers and share the new talents you’ve discovered via social media to further help these artists grow from emerging to superstar status.

So we strongly suggest that you guys get involved in RAW!  And the first way you can do that is by going to their website, www.RAWartists.org/brisbane, and  purchase tickets to their next event, RADIATE, next Wednesday night and Oh Hello! And while you’re on their website you can also catch a sneak peek at the showcasing artists.

Presale tickets are $15 and tickets at the door are $20.

Doors open at 7:30pm and showcase starts at 8:30pm.

And if we need to persuade you even further we’ve got a double pass to RAW: RADIATE to give away to one of you guys. To win just tell us about or show us your RAW talent on our Facebook page.

Good luck and hope to see you there!
