Electric Zebra On Their Latest EP And MGVC

Electric Zebra On Their Latest EP And MGVC
Taylor Furby

With the Mountain Goat Valley Crawl (MGVC) less than a month away, we had a chat to Keelan from Electric Zebra.

MGVC is on Saturday February 16. It’s a completely free event with ten venues such as Crowbar, The Zoo, The Brightside and heaps others involved in the event. The lineup boasts an insane 50+ bands, many of them local Brisbane bands. Running from 5pm to midnight, it’s a great way to spend a Saturday night.

Brissy’s Electric Zebra have been playing a bunch of shows around Brisbane and MGVC is the perfect opportunity to check them out if you haven’t already. They’ve supported big acts such as Cloud Nothings and British India as well as a range of other bands.

After a couple of hitches, Electric Zebra dropped their EP You’re Sinking September last year. “It took us a while to put it together. We had to go to a few different studios. The place where we started shut down and we had to record some at home. It was a big process to try and get that done so it’s great to work on something for a long period and then put it out.”

The EP has been really well received considering they’ve had to push the album themselves. “We didn’t have any PR or advertising behind it so we were just hoping that we’d reach people who were coming to the shows and people who had heard of us before and try and keep touring and keep playing as many shows as we can to reach new people.”

So who influences Electric Zebra’s sound? “It changes a lot between EPs at the moment I really like the Ball Park Music album that came out last year and that’s really changed the way I look at songwriting. Generally I love a lot of Screamfeeder, Pavement, The Pixies and some more recent stuff as well.”

So how do Electric Zebra prepare for shows? “Just try and get together and rehearse a bit before we play and sharpen up all the old songs. And get some new songs ready to go. There’s one or two [new songs] that might be ready by then.”

With an insane lineup of 50+ bands, we definitely recommend check out Electric Zebra if you’re heading along to MGVC. “We’re gonna be playing our last EP so it’s a good chance to come hear those songs how they’re supposed to sound in person. It’s a good chance to hear some new stuff. We’re just excited to play it and be apart of such a big lineup. There’s over 50 bands. A bunch of venues. I think it’s gonna be a great time.”

Also some suggestions for other bands to see. “Keen to see Raave Tapes again, I saw them recently and they’re incredible. I’m really keen to see The Jensens, I did see them the other night and they were amazing. They’ve got some great new stuff. There’s so many.”

And there’s some new music on the horizon for Electric Zebra. “We’ve started working on writing an album so we’ll hopefully have an album out later in the year.”

Get in early to see Electric Zebra at MGVC next month.
