Have you ever been to a circus? Cirque du Soleil? Or maybe your run-of-the-mill, traditional Russian circus with lions and ponies and hula hoops ablaze? If you haven’t, it’s not a problem. I made the Russian one sound kind of trashy anyway.

Consider instead going to a RAW: natural born artists event. They’re held in over 60 cities worldwide each year, including  Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Vancouver and soon, London and Paris. As a plus, they’re every bit as colourful and energetic as a circus, minus the stress of wondering whether or not that lion has been fed recently.

With their next event ‘Elevation‘ to be held this Friday, July 19 in Fortitude Valley’s ever-abuzz Brunswick Street, you can expect to be one of about 1000 attendees headed along to see all mediums, and genres, of art.

Think performance, film, photography, music, hair, makeup, accessories and, naturally, art – presented to you by a menagerie of creative, up-and-coming independent Australian artists whose work has been handpicked specifically for the night. With  over 30 artists in total, including Anthea Nesteski (fashion), Robert Makol (photography) and VladsVortex (art), showcases are selected by the Brisbane Showcase Director, mostly via either submission or scouting.

In terms of how the event’s title, Elevation, comes into play, the organisation’s national executive director Kristen Wehlow explained that overall, it doesn’t have a great deal of influence.

“Each of our showcases have a different title that separates it from the rest. We don’t enforce any set themes on our showcasing artists and their work – they’re free to showcase how they like!”

Artists aside, Wehlow said that the intention of the Brisbane event as a whole was to open people up to new, artistic experiences.

“We hope our attendees will take away a new found appreciation for an art form that they’ve never been exposed to before. We have so many people coming along to see their mate’s band for example, who have never been to art gallery or fashion show before and it opens up this new experience for them and they might even purchase some work from a visual artist, or decide they actually do like fashion shows!  RAW showcases are a one-night creative circus! There is so much to discover everywhere you turn.”

In a YouTube video published one year ago titled ‘Welcome to RAW‘, RAW: natural born artists’ founder and executive directer Heidi Luerra said that “every artist deserves to be seen, heard, and loved” and that RAW is an organisation set up “for artists, by artists”.

With simple intentions like that, held at one of the most popular locations in Brisbane, and with a cocktail bar to boot, you ought to go. You really ought to.
