Australian actor Christie Whelan-Browne is set to perform the leading role in Britney Spears: The Cabaret at Brisbane Powerhouse this month.

Under the direction of award-winning writer and director Dean Bryant, Whelan-Browne will showcase a humorous take on the perils of fame as Britney Spears’ songs are transformed into delightful cabaret music.

I was lucky enough to gain some insight into the show when I had a quick chat with Whelan-Browne.

CD: How would you describe Britney Spears: The Cabaret in your own words?

CWB: (It is) a look at the life of one of the world’s biggest pop stars, but heard from her point of view.

CD: How would you describe your character?

CWB: She is fun, vibrant, emotional and very forthcoming.

CD: What inspired you to perform this leading role?

CWB: (Britney Spears: The Cabaret) was written for me by a writer who I admire and it was a story that was very interesting to me.

CD: What has been the main challenge when preparing for Britney Spears: The Cabaret?

CWB: It’s like a roller coaster for an hour and ten minutes. Fifteen songs, numerous monologues – I think there is a mind set to be in to get through it each night.

CD: What has been one of the highlights when preparing for this production?

CWB: I love the trust that Dean and Mathew have put in me to allow me to create this with them. It has really been a gift in my career and allowed people to see what I can do as an actress.

Having recently finished a season opposite Geoffrey Rush in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Whelan-Browne will be performing Britney Spears: The Cabaret mid-august at Brisbane’s arts and culture hub, Brisbane Powerhouse.
