GOMA Presents Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion
Jordan Maass | On 07, Dec 2014
An exhibit filled with avant-garde Japanese fashion, Future Beauty is an exquisite look at the innovative and incredibly creative designs to come out of Japan over the last 30 years in a collection presented at GOMA.
In today’s fashion landscape, it’s quite easy to see the heavy influence that Japanese design has over modern fashion and has had for the last 30 years.  With designers like Comme des Garçons, Yuhji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Undercover and Mint Designs all featured in this extensive showcase, it’s breathtaking to see the feats of such incredible minds come to life in spectacular garments.
The exhibition spreads the designs over four key elements entitled ‘In Praise of Shadows’, ‘Flatness’, ‘Tradition & Innovation’ and ‘Cool Japan’. In Praise of Shadow’s revolves around the idea of texture and light and the heavy use of black in fashion in the 1980s. In ‘Flatness’, you witness the garment on the mannequin and then spread out and framed to see the differentiating views of fashion and the use of volume. In ‘Tradition & Innovation’, the rules of fashion and design are thrown out the window and the experimentation of textures, shapes and new ways to create material are at the forefront of these avant-garde designs. In ‘Cool Japan’, it is all about the Harajuku girl. With colourful designs and outrageous style, this element showcases the youth subcultures within Japan that have made streetstyle a major component of Japanese fashion.
The exhibition has been curated by prominent fashion historian Akiko Fukai with the garments being transported to Brisbane from the archives of the Kyoto Costume Institute. As well as the more than 100 garments on display, the exhibition offers a whole round experience to immerse yourself into Japanese fashion through print, film & text. A spectacular for any fashion student or fan alike, this showcase is breathtaking in it’s design and innovation and it is a must-see for any Brisbane resident over the summer.
