Interview: Artist Alice Nucifora

Interview: Artist Alice Nucifora
Kerstin

Meet artist Alice Nucifora, one of our talented feature artists at Young at Art on August 8.Alice Nucifora

Creative Drinks: What do you do in the creative space?

Alice: I do a lot of commission. So I have little business cards and I’ve started setting up websites. I do commissions on the side to get money where I can. And then sketching wherever I can, in my spare time.

Creative Drinks: So you an artist? A drawer?

Alice: Yeah. I kind of say I’m an artist, I’m hoping when studying calms down I can do big projects again, because I really like them. But in the meantime, if I get any offers, I’ll just do whatever.

Creative Drinks: What sort of style would you say your work is in?

Alice: I really like realism. I got really stuck into it, still lifes, portraits. I really like faces. And painting and drawing and sketching and stuff, that sort of deal. Sometimes I like making it kind of surreal, but still realistic.

Creative Drinks: What tools do you use?

Alice: Painting. I really like acrylic and I’ve started getting into water colour. I try to mess around with as many mediums as I possibly can. So sketching, I’ve even got calligraphy ink and play around with that too.

Creative Drinks: What do you hope to get from participating in Creative Drinks?

Alice: I really want to get out there more! At the moment, a lot of people are “Why aren’t you studying art?” and it’s just so many things that I want to do with my life and I keep thinking “I really want to stick with art” but it’s just really hard to get out there if you’re not doing an art course and the people aren’t getting you out there through the course. So I’m really just hoping to get more exposure, so that I can take up more commissions and maybe even feature my own artworks at a bigger gallery. Just get better known.

Creative Drinks: What other artists inspire you, or even, who do you just like?

Alice: I really like older painters. I don’t know if I have a painter in particular, but just looking at some of the realism and the amount of detail that can be put into a lot of those Renaissance sort of art.

Creative Drinks: Do you do a series of things? Or do you go in all sorts of different directions at once?

Alice: It’s kind of a bit of both. I mean, when I’m in a sort of situation, I generally look out for people because that’s just my favourite thing to draw and its what I know best to do. But sometimes if I’m bored, I’ll just draw whatever is in front of me, maybe set it up so it’s kind of like a still life.

Creative Drinks: People watch television for hours on end. Do you instead draw?

Alice: Sometimes. I mean, sometimes when the mood strikes. When I was in high school, I used to do it constantly. Unfortunately, life’s got a lot busier lately but if I had nothing to do? Yeah, I would be content just to sit and draw for hours.
