Bella Derham has been slowly building her online jewellery store Brother Billy in Melbourne – all handmade, all designed by her. While we can’t find her pieces in store just yet, there’s a lot to be said for her success and recognition online, and how well her new collection is doing. We caught up with Derham to discuss how her current collection is going and where she’s headed with Brother Billy.

CREATIVE DRINKS: How did Brother Billy start?

BELLA DERHAM: Brother Billy originated from my love of jewellery and my struggle to find the right pieces at affordable prices. I found it really hard to find simple jewellery that can be worn everyday for an appropriate price and figured that I couldn’t have been the only one. I took it upon myself to change this and came up with designs that could be worn both by themselves and with other pieces but at prices that won’t break the bank!

CD: How long have you been designing jewellery for?

BD: I have really only been designing jewellery since Brother Billy started up in September 2014, but I have a longstanding passion for jewellery and all things aesthetic. I believe this gives me a great starting point for creating an iconic brand with a prosperous future.

CD: In three words describe your style and designs

BD: Simple, iconic and elegant.

CD: Your jewellery is quite dainty and minimalist – is this typically you’re the look you go for or is experimenting with other looks something you would be interested in?

BD: I would only ever design something I would wear myself, so for now I am planning on sticking to my simplistic and minimalist designs. You never know though, my tastes could change so my designs could too!

CD: Who do you picture wearing your jewellery? Do you look to anyone for inspiration or have a type of girl you design for?

BD: I try my very hardest to create pieces that I feel any girl or woman would want to wear. I get a lot of inspiration from my friends and, funnily enough, my boyfriend too.

CD: It’s now 2015, what can we expect from Brother Billy in the New Year? Any projects you can tell us about?

BD:I’ve got a few things planned, but I’m not giving away anything just yet so watch this space!

CD: Do you plan on expanding to do other types of accessories or clothing?

BD: I would love to expand into other avenues in the future. I have a few ideas in the mixing pot that I’m playing with so we’ll just have to wait and see!

CD: I’ve noticed that you also do some home wares, is this something that’s of interest to you or something you plan on pursuing further?

BD: I am a sucker for good home wares but though this is an area of great interest to me, I don’t plan on designing them anytime soon.

CD: If you could collaborate with any other designer, who would it be?

BD: Oh that’s a hard one! A very close friend of mine and I have created a hand made candle company called ‘La Cire’, so I could say that I already have! Otherwise, I would love to collab with Aimee-Cherie Kendall – her pieces are out of this world.

CD: Is collaboration something you would want to do, or plan on doing in the future?

BD: It is definitely something I would like to look into.

CD: Where do you see Brother Billy heading down the track?

BD: It would be great to do a few market stalls, sharing my love for design with others, but, ideally, having my pieces sold in boutique stores would be amazing.
