Do you ever imagine that one day you’ll be working in New York City, summering in The Hamptons, and dancing at Coachella? Eliza O’Connor, a Zimmermann employee from Brisbane, has done it all.

There are some people that you stumble across on Instagram, and you just wonder, “WOW! How is their life that awesome.” Eliza  (@lizeoconnor)  is definitely one of those people. Her pictures, and just her life in general showcase a roller coaster of sunny LA and snowy NYC, with pitstops around the country to Mexico, Colorado and Vegas. But how does she do it? Well, working for iconic Australian label Zimmermann played some part in it, but it was ultimately Eliza’s determination and ambition to make something of herself.

She will definitely make you envious, but also inspire you, as this Brisbane girl follows her dreams.

CD: What led you to work in the US?

Eliza: I’ve been frequently travelling to the US since I was about 11 with my family, so it’s always had incredibly good vibes to me. I felt like I needed to get out into the real world and start kicking some goals, so I booked my flights and left.

CD: Did you do previous study in business or fashion? Do you think it’s necessary to succeed in the industry?

E: Prior to my spontaneous up and go, I had studied 2 years of Business majoring in PR. I don’t really believe it’s necessary to have a piece of paper saying you completed a degree. I believe it’s way more important to have experience and people skills. It’s all about connections, not the degree you graduate with.

CD: How long have you been working for Zimmermann?

E: I started working for Zimmermann when I was 17.

CD: What interested you in working for Zimmermann initially?

E: It was the brand I grew up with – I bought my first Zimmermann bikini when I was 15, it’s so iconic. It basically encapsulates my teenage years. So I have always had a significant connection to the brand. Plus I’ve always wanted to work for an iconic Australian label. I think Australian’s have an insane sense of style.

CD: What difference did you find between the creative cultures overseas in comparison to Brisbane?

E: Overseas people are more interested in your ideas, perceptions, thoughts etc. in regards to everything, but especially, creativity. I think Brisbane has come a long way, but I also believe we have a long way to go in that regard.

CD: Now that you’re back in Australia, what are your future plans?

E: I am going to knuckle down and finish my degree. I only have one year to go. I’m heading back to America throughout the year to work on some exciting things, but for the most part I will be studying and working in Bris-Vegas. But I definitely will be up and exploring the globe even more when my degree is done.
