Is Athleisure The Style Of 2020?

Is Athleisure The Style Of 2020?
Jessica McKenna

2020 has had a rough start; a global pandemic, who could have seen that coming. Even with life slowly going back to normal, a lot of our exciting yearly events, such as fashion shows, are still cancelled for the foreseeable future. So where are we all gathering our latest fashion inspiration now? Luckily, we have Instagram as a resource for fashion related content.

Since isolation started, activewear inspired outfits have been saturating our feeds to quickly become questionably the style of the year so far. Bike shorts, sweatpants, oversized tees, runners, these items of clothing that are normally essential for working out are now being worn for style.

Sure, athleisure has always had a category of it’s own in fashion but with the world being a little topsy turby at the moment activewear is a current trend that will likely be around for a little while longer. So for this reason, TCI has decided to give a shout out to stylish activewear that can be worn regardless of whether or not you will be exercising.

If you were to visit any fashion website right now you would find bike shorts in a range of colours and sizes. While yes, bike shorts are great for running, weights and dancing, they are also very on trend and can be worn a range of different ways. Our choice, however, would be to mix a pair of white bike shorts with an oversized jumper (a la Princess Dianna), paired with either Dr Martens or a cool sneaker. Luckily, if you live in Queensland this outfit can be worn during Winter too!

Sweatpants, normally known as a guilty pleasure to be worn while binging Big Little Lies and eating a block of chocolate; are now seen being worn everywhere, especially now that the weather is getting cooler. Since sweatpants are typically oversized, try wearing a cropped jumper or firmer fitting shirt on top to contrast with the bottom bulky fit, or find a jogger style sweatpant that tapers at the bottom to give your legs some definition.

Lastly, we can’t talk athleisure without mentioning a fun pair of sneakers, that are just as good for running errands as they are for going for a jog. There are endless styles, fits and colours of running shoes on the market at the moment and whether you are into simplistic or bright and bold there will be a something to suit everyone. Our pick for both running and everyday are the Nike Renew Run. These babies come in both neutral and coloured designs and are the perfect comfy, supportive fit.

Whether you love or hate this trend, we believe it is here to stay, at least for a little longer.

Take advantage and enjoy dressing comfortably!
