Japanese Hot Pot At Shabuhouse, Brisbane CBD
Giulietta Avenia | On 27, Nov 2014
Shabuhouse is a Japanese hot pot and buffet restaurant where diners can create their own dishes using the delicious ingredients provided.
Shabu Shabu is one of Japan’s most popular hot pot dishes and Shabuhouse doesn’t disappoint.
Each table has portable stoves sunk into its surface. Into these stoves, a diner can place a tureen of soup, choosing from three flavours; miso, dry fish soup or tomyam soup. I chose the miso soup, which was creamy and rich in flavour.
Once the soup is bubbling away in the table, diners can pick and choose what ingredients they want to toss in.
As it was my first time having Japanese hot pot, I opted to include every ingredient possible.
With prawns, calamari, beef belly and an assortment of vegetables, I filled my tureen to the brim with fresh, tasty ingredients. The ingredients take no time to cook with the prawns quickly turning orange before your eyes in the bubbling soup. Similarly, the paper-thin slices of raw beef or pork cook almost instantly and melt away on the tongue. But as delicious as these meats are, I can never go past tofu. Tofu works particularly well in Shabu Shabu as it absorbs the flavour of the soup. A variety of noodles are also at hand to bulk up the soup even more.
Whilst the soup is the main focus of the day, another great element to Shabuhouse’s buffet is their sushi. The sushi is rolled fresh and gobbled up almost instantly. I went back for seconds of the chicken Karaage roll and fried prawn roll. You can never go wrong with friend prawn!
Last but not least, Shabuhouse also has a hot foods section of the buffet that offers fried rice, spring rolls, the plumpest of plump potato croquettes and sticky chicken drumsticks that had me licking my fingers clean with happiness.
Shabuhouse is not your typical buffet restaurant. It provides clean, tasty eating options. It has a strong base in its delicious soups without which this restaurant would not last. It has become one of my new favourite restaurants and one I cannot wait to return to.
