There is nothing better than a pizza. A thin, crispy base. A few carefully chosen ingredients scattered on top. And cheese. Gimme dat cheese.

Beccofino at Teneriffe has long been renowned as serving Brisbane’s best pizzas. With their focus on traditional flavours and their expert pizza makers, Brisbanites have been flocking in droves to Beccofino for the past ten years. Now, the creative minds behind Beccofino have opened another restaurant, Julius in South Brisbane, which has all south siders rejoicing.

With a similar menu to Beccofino, there is little room for error at Julius. The food must be at the same consistent standard that has earned Beccofino its reputation, the service must be slick and friendly and the decor must be charming.

On all fronts, Julius scores well.

The decor has a distinct urban feel, with exposed brick walls and sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The custom-built Stefano Ferrara pizza oven greets diners at the door and assures them of a delicious meal ahead.

Whilst Julius’ menu does extend beyond pizza, with dishes of pasta and meat, the pizza is where the restaurant truly shines.

With a choice of a rosse or bianche base, and topping options that will tantalize your tastebuds, Julius aims to fulfil all your pizza dreams. I find it impossible to go past their Tartufo pizza with pork and fennel sausage, roasted Spanish onion, mozzarella and truffle paste. Mmm, truffle paste… Another favourite is the Gennaro with its roasted eggplant, thin, wide cuts of salami, chilli and lashings of mozzarella and stracchino.

Like its sister restaurant, Julius does not take bookings, so if you’re arriving during rush hour make sure you enjoy the bar lined with bottles of Aperol that are crying out to be turned into a Spritz.

Beccofino and Julius pride themselves on providing simple, consistent food so don’t expect to see grand dishes with intricate techniques on the menu. Instead, enjoy the dishes for what they are- rustic, traditional Italian cooking that warms your soul.
