Kwame Discusses Splendour to BIGSOUND
Kwame takes the stage this week for showcases at BIGSOUND.
After winning Triple J’s Unearthed competition to open the main stage at Splendour In The Grass in July, Kwame has started to pop up everywhere in the last few months. Kwame has just popped up at One Night Stand in Tassie and is supporting Tkay Maidza on tour starting this week. But before heading on tour, he’s making a stop in Brisbane for BIGSOUND. We had a chat with Kwame about all things Splendour and BIGSOUND.
Firstly, we had to ask about Splendour. “Splendour was crazy, shoutout Triple J Unearthed! I entered the Splendour Unearthed competition that they run each year, next thing you know mama rang my phone and told me that she is really proud! (Legit though, Ben and Liam got my Mum to call me live on air. I was actually in bed too. Such a weird moment.)”
Seemingly Kwame keeps moving up and up. “Splendour opened up a lot of opportunities, however it was all up to what I had down next. Act quick, never stay stagnant!”
He gifted us with his Endless Conversations EP in March only a year after Lesson Learned so maintaining momentum seems important to Kwame. “Quality over quantity, you can drop project after project over a numerous amount of times, however the level of creativity can drop because all you’re concerned about is just executing the music.
“Personally I like to drop one project a year. I take my time when writing projects, never rush the process! Each project is a reflection of who I was in that year. My sound always changes, I can’t be releasing the same stuff!!”
What about standout moments? “I think a standout moment was when Wiley came through the studio and was impressed by the content being made. We work from bedrooms, and he couldn’t believe the amount of quality he heard. The exact quote that had me frozen was ‘I’ve gotta tell Skepta & JME about this, they’ll love it here!’”
With an array of incredible artists, who inspires Kwame? “Bon Iver, James Blake, Francis and the Lights, KIDS SEE GHOST, Theophilus London, Smino, Noname, Mick Jenkins, Kanye West. Honestly the list goes on!!”
Now if Kwame could tour with anyone it’d be, “Tyler, The Creator. That would be so fun!” We’d definitely be keen to see a Tyler, The Creator/Kwame tour.
With BIGSOUND just around the corner, rehearsals for all the artists have started. “I’m rehearsing and fine tuning the sets for each performance to perfection!”
Kwame’s got showcases on Tuesday at The Elephant Hotel and Thursday at Famous, and here’s why you should be stopping by to see him. “People can always expect high energy at my shows! Through my set list I like to take fans through a journey of emotions through the music. To create an experience, a story, something for them to take and walk away with. It really is a moment in time that you can only witness if you’re there.”
Outside of Kwame, he’s got suggestions for other acts to check out at BIGSOUND. “I’m really keen to see a few acts! Arno Faraji, Triple One, Kota Banks, Genesis Owusu, KAIIT, Adrian Eagle, CLYPSO, GRAACE and Samsaruh.”
