Miss Mary Mac

Matilda Butler

Sophia Mary Mac has been in the business of making beautiful things for years now. Working full-time as a graphic designer, Sophia finds time for illustration, skateboarding and making some good looking decks. She came in for a chat this week before our “Nothing but Networking” event on Thursday night, to tell us about her work.

To start off, Sophia Mary Mac is the sweetest name.  is it your real name?

Yeah, well my last name is MacDermott but it’s a family thing. My Pop’s name’s Poppy Mac. A few years ago a friend wrote a song about me it was called, Miss Mary Mac and I thought, “Oh, I’m going to use that!”.

How long have you been doing what you do with art and design?

I’ve been doing it forever but, I suppose I’ve been getting paid to do it for three years. I’ve only been doing shows for two years.

Where did you study?

QUT, Interactive and Visual Design. I’m finishing it now over at the Queensland College of Arts. So I’ve done three years and I’m doing my last now because I’ve been working full-time as a graphic designer.

So what’s your real passion when it comes to creating?

I like illustration.

What has developed your style?

I don’t know, I don’t think I’m there yet. But, I suppose that it’s really feminine. I guess the common thread between it all is hair. I’m not necessarily a “hair person” but I really like it – I like drawing it. The decks and skateboards and stuff, I guess I skate with my friends a bit. My big brother was a pro-skater, I started doing it because I wanted to impress my big brother. Then I kinda kept doing it because I got shows and I used to skate myself.

Sophia will be at our “Nothing but Networking” event on Thursday night with a few of her skateboard designs, so make sure you come along and say hello. She’s a talent artist and designer, with fresh ideas and style. If you want to see more, check out her website/blog and facebook – it’ll be worth your while!
