Morgana Screening Exclusively at Dendy Cooparoo
Lily Hirst

The Australian documentary about pornographic film star Morgana Muses is screening exclusively at Dendy cinema in Cooparoo.

Co-written and directed by Isabel Peppard and Josie Hess, Morgana explores the life and career of Morgana Muses, a pornographic star in her 50s who was catapulted to success through her award winning erotic film “Duty Bound”.

After 20 years as a dutiful housewife stuck in a loveless, sexless marriage, Morgana has had enough of her dreary life. Desperately lonely and starved of intimacy, she books a male escort for one last hurrah before ending it all. Her final night takes an unexpected turn when her relationship with the escort opens up a new world of personal and sexual freedom.

Peppard and Hess originally met in 2013 at a punk gig in inner city Melbourne and a friendship was born. They immediately began collaborating on a series of projects together and one day Hess approached Peppard to document the 50th birthday of one female pornographer Morgana Muses.

Upon meeting Muses, the two became fascinated by her story as a suburban housewife and her transformation into a BDSM star. They approached her, initially just to make a short documentary, but the project took on a life of its own, filming over the course of five years, and taking the the team from the suburbs of rural Victoria to the BDSM clubs of Berlin and beyond.

Featuring interviews from Australian comedian Judith Lucy, pornographic actresses Jiz Lee and Stoya and filmmaker Shine Louise Houston, the film explores both Muses’s existence as an icon in the feminist porn world, and her interpersonal life as a woman who struggles with self doubt, depression and past trauma.

Funded by a successful kickstarter campaign, the film originally premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2019, with its first North American screening at the Fantasia Film festival in August this year. Morgana won the Best Australian Independent Film Award at the Gold Coast film festival and is the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia‘s Docomentary of the Month for this November.

Current holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this is a dazzling, in depth documentary that you won’t want to miss.
