New Summer Playlist Add From MARLOE.
Lauren Bozzetto

Brisbane artist MARLOE. just dropped her blissful new single ‘Worked Harder’ and has given TCI all the details about the track’s creation and the learning experiences throughout the process.

Bursting onto the music scene last year, MARLOE. has since built quite an impressive and groovy electro-pop discography. Co-writing with artists like Kate Miller Heidke, and charting #1 on the What’s In-Store Music Charts, she is making her mark on the Australian and global music scene.

‘Worked Harder’ is a fun, bright and bold tune which gives a glimpse of MARLOE.’s inner monologue during a time where she felt like people were overstepping her boundaries. It’s sassy, catchy, and definitely one to add to your summer playlist.

The Creative Issue: You expressed you wrote ‘Worked Harder’ during a time when you felt like people were abusing your boundaries. Do you enjoy this process of turning personal experiences into song, and why?

MARLOE.: Yes, I absolutely love it. Writing about personal experiences is kind of like therapy. It’s my body’s way of telling me I need to let go of whatever emotion is attached to the experience I went through, and I think it’s pretty cool to be able to look back on all of those situations and see how much I’ve grown.

TCI: Adding something new to your already stellar discography with this dreamy and groovy pop number, what was your initial vision for the song?

M: I wanted it to have attitude but still feel sophisticated, groovy and bright.

TCI: ‘Worked Harder’ was written in-studio during the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown. What is your typical approach to songwriting? How was this affected by the challenges of lockdown?

M: Typically, I go into the studio and have back-to-back days so we can really smash out songs and just make little changes here and there. But with COVID-19 we had one studio day where we wrote the majority of the song, then about a month later we recorded final vocals, then we sent the track over to Evan Klar in Berlin who did his thing producing the track. So, it was a very different approach to normal.

TCI: You worked with MDWS as a co-writer for this new track. How was this experience? What are the most valuable things you learnt from one another throughout this process?

M: It was great, MDWS is such a legend and really eager to throw ideas out and just give things a try which is super important when co-writing. Ah I’d say we both probably learnt to go with our gut on what the song needed and that sometimes lyrics don’t need this great deeper meaning, sometimes they just are.

TCI: You’ve spent a lot of time writing with artists like Jaguar Jonze, Austen, Mickey Kojak and Eddie Perfect and also co-writing Kate Miller Heidke’s ‘You Can’t Hurt Me Anymore’. Do you enjoy the process of song writing? How have these experiences influenced your work as MARLOE.?

M: Yeah, I do! It’s funny I actually used to be terrified about co-writing with people, I was always scared I wouldn’t be good enough. But, when I attended the APRA AMCOS SongHubs, which is where I got to work with all those fabulous people, it really put things into perspective for me and made me realise that wasn’t the case at all. I think those experiences helped me to back myself even more and to see my own value as a writer and an artist.

TCI: Who are some of the artists that inspire you most right now?

M: G Flip, Harry Styles & Mallrat.

TCI: There is no doubt that 2020 has been a crazy year. What can we expect from MARLOE. in 2021? Have you got anything exciting in the works?

M: Hopefully plenty more live shows, I’m definitely missing that a lot right now. Maybe a bigger body of work? Who knows, stay tuned!

Although 2020 has been a tough year for the music industry, MARLOE. has taken these experiences and many more to grow and produce this killer new track! If you aren’t already hooked, take a listen to ‘Worked Harder’ and stay tuned for more impressive work from MARLOE.
