QSO finished off their 2021 season with three musical masterpieces in an enthralling closing gala on Saturday night in the QPAC concert hall.

Before the concert, QPAC was a hive of activity, with every table at the café, bistro and Lyrebird restaurant taken. As well as QSO’s gala, it was also the closing night of Queensland Ballet’s Dracula. This helped create an atmosphere of excitement and celebration.

Conducted by Umberto Clerici, QSO performed orchestral and operatic works by Rossini, Debussy and Strauss. It was a thoroughly enjoyable program, spanning from cheeky birds to the majesty of the ocean to complex love stories.

The concert opened with Rossini’s sparkling overture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie). The chirping piccolo mimicked a cheeky birdcall. The overture combined comedy and drama, balancing light and dark.

Debussy’s impressionistic La Mer (The Sea) painted vivid soundscapes of the sea. It started with rumbling drums and sparse instrumentation, like the calm before the storm. The two harps began a rippling melody. Then, the wind and waves swept across the orchestra.

The final piece, Strauss’ suite from Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose), was full of passion and love. A luscious melody flowed from the strings. The flutes and harps depicted an alluring rose.

QSO’s season closing gala was met with rapturous applause. After the concert, QSO held a reception outside QPAC with nibblies and drinks and the chance to meet the artists. It was a fitting way to celebrate all that they have achieved this year and to look forward to next year.

QSO celebrates 75 years of music-making in 2022. From intimate chamber concerts to classic masterpieces in the concert hall to world premieres of works by Australian composers, QSO’s 2022 season will take you on a musical journey. Take a look at their 2022 season here.
