The Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2014-2015 is now accepting entries from budding playwrights who one day dream of seeing their name in lights and are in need of a little help to get there.

This competition is a pretty big deal. The winner (or winners) will work with some of Brisbane’s top performing arts people to professionally produce their work as part of the Queensland Theatre Company’s 2015 season. Before then, three lucky finalists will be selected to further develop their piece through workshops and public presentations. They will even receive a commission for their hard work.

The 2012-13 year winner was Maxine Mellor’s Trollop. That play is currently gearing up to have its premiere outing in front of the public; it will run from the 1st through to the 17th of August this year at the Bille Brown Studio in West End.

If you’re lacking a bit of inspiration, this might be a great place for you to start firing up your creative juices. At the very least, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see a good play.

So, what’s a struggling writer got to do to get a look in?

It may sound counter-intuitive, but you don’t have to write (though you are welcome to do so). In fact, the Queensland Theatre Company is looking for entries in pretty much any format. Video, audio and images entries are all acceptable.

The most important thing is you have to have an idea; a good one that has “relevance to Queensland audiences”. The Award is all about connecting locals to their community and history through the creation of a high-quality, original piece of performing art.

30 November is the deadline for submissions and you must be able to submit your initial idea electronically via the online form.

In January 2014, finalists will be invited to pitch their work in person before a panel of industry experts.

What are you waiting for? It might not be Broadway (just yet), but Queensland is home and home is where the heart is. Time to follow yours….
