Return of the Sci-Fi: Brisbane’s Science Fiction Theatre Festival Is Back
Tasha Porritt

For all of you intrepid explorers, watchers of the stars and lovers of the distinctly peculiar I have excellent news. The Brisbane Science Fiction Theatre festival is back to celebrate their second year.

Last April, S’Witch Collective brought Brisbane an incredible collection of sci-fi stage magic and we have clamoured for more. This theatre festival is unlike any other, providing the public with a window into worlds beyond our wildest imagination.

Come along to TAFE Queensland’s Southbank campus in central Brisbane. Witness a variety of established and upcoming artists as they explore the wonderful world of Science Fiction. For five days this festival will host a variety of mainstage productions, works in progress and roleplay experiences and readings. Audience members are encouraged to become a part of the creativity and innovative entertainment.

Festival Director Chelsea O’Brien notes that “This festival encourages makers and artists to bring theatre into the 21st century. We’ve had a lot of fun watching shows experiment with technology, lighting and musically all other ways to immerse the audience into the strange and wonderful sci-fi world they are creating”. Lighting will be designed by award-winning Geoff Squires. Squires famously worked on the extremely successful stage version of Matilda

This festival cannot be rivalled for variety and excitement. It includes reimaginings of classics such as War of the Worlds and HP Lovecraft’s The Colour of Out of Space, as well as fantastic new and original performances. AIWA by the AIWA Initiative will give one audience member an incredible chance to explore the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence. Attendees can also enjoy improv shows, cabaret, live D&D, and shows aimed at all ages. Those who loved last years show can see some of the previous works in progress as they reach their final form.

This is what last year’s audience had to say about the festival:

“This is going to be awesome.”

“This festival is sooo much fun and loads of interesting performances.”

“Brisbane is forever changed. What a time!”

Between the 1st and the 5th of April, you can go and see a wide variety of incredible shows for anything between $10 and $25 a ticket. Get yourself to Southbank and then to another universe altogether!
