Review: 5SOS at Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre

Review: 5SOS at Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre
Taylor Furby

Last night at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre brought me straight back to feeling sixteen again.

Like many teenage girls, there was a time when 5 Seconds of Summer basically ruled my life. Their self-titled album blew my sixteen-year-old mind. However, a few years and a hiatus later, I was unsure heading into this 5SOS show. But as always, they went above and beyond my expectations during the show. Although this shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the success of their latest album, Youngblood.

They kicked off the show with ‘Babylon’, the last track on their latest album and fans went wild. Throughout the entire show, not only were the people on the floor dancing to their heart’s content, but the stands were literally shaking during each song. The shaking provided a springboard of energy for the crowd. Every few minutes another girl was pulled out of the crowd because of the intensity of the 5SOS fans.

The majority of the show comprised tracks from Youngblood. Stand outs included ‘Want You Back’, ‘Lie To Me’ and ‘Valentine’. 5SOS didn’t disappoint fans who were hanging out for their older songs, hitting us with some of their well-known slow songs like ‘Amnesia’ and ‘Jet Black Heart’ but also throwing a curveball with a completely different rendition of ‘The Only Reason’ from their EP She Looks So Perfect.

As a band, they work well together with an onstage chemistry that can only come from strong friendships offstage. I’ve seen 5 Seconds of Summer a few times now and this was easily the best show I’ve seen them play musically. It’s great seeing them moving onto bigger and better things each time they come to Australia.

Finishing off their show with their two biggest hits, ‘She Looks So Perfect’ and finally ‘Youngblood’ made it a night to remember and made my splitting headache worth it. They certainly know how to get a crowd hyped and make a girl feel young again.
