Scrumptious Reads on James St. is a haven for booklovers and foodlovers alike.

This boutique bookstore stocks a veritable treasure trove of recipe books, novels and journals focusing on food, travel and lifestyle. Not only would you find recipe books from big names such as Yotam Ottolenghi and Neil Perry, but also independently published food journals both Australian and international.

I recently visited Scrumptious Reads, primarily to browse and acquaint myself with the store that I had been longing to visit for several months, and I found it impossible to leave empty handed.IMG_1394

Stocking journals covering all areas of food and alcohol it was rather difficult to know where to start. Luckily, owner Julie Tjiandra was at hand to explain the tones of the different tomes.

Whilst I am determined to go back and buy a copy of everything, the three journals I walked away with are all beautiful in their individuality.

A particularly sweet journal, I was excited to buy issue one of Scrag End as it is a Brisbane based journal. With its first issue, Scrag End is focusing on the producers. Articles range from Italian immigrants bottling some of the finest prosecco in Australia, to duck farmers who feed their birds strawberries in summer and refuse to be beaten down to an unfair price, and illustrations depicting the life of a baker. This is a magazine all Brisbane food lovers should support as it in turn is supporting Australia’s food industry.

Alquimie is a sexy, sophisticated magazine that is ‘breathing new life into drinks’. Founded by four friends, this Melbourne based quarterly magazine ‘simplifies the complexities of beverage culture without pretension’. Articles range from tastings of boutique champagnes, to an exposé on Chinese cooking, and even an interview with famed painter Mirka Mora.



The third magazine I bought was Fool, a Swedish magazine. I bought their fourth issue as it deals primarily with Italian cuisine, flavours that are near and dear to my heart. With thick pages, glossy photos rich with detail and interviews with only the most exclusive names in food, Fool is revered by chefs and home cooks alike. Articles focus on the philosophical aspect of food, whilst others delve into the production and creation of fine foods.


fool If you want to expand your food knowledge, or if you are simply after some interesting reading material, Scrumptious Reads will have something for you. Whilst these three magazines are all equally enticing in their own right, there are countless more to hunger over and devour.
