Serenity: The Art of John Fu Chong
To start off 2020 in the right way, Art from the Margins will be launching an exhibition by local artist John Fu Chong – Serenity: The Art of John Fu Chong.
Art from the Margins is part of Wesley Mission Queensland whose mission is to shine a light on those who may not normally be highlighted. People who have faced homelessness, those with disabilities, mental health issues and those living with adversity are all featured by this initiative. Late January to February will see the exhibited work of Brisbane-based, Chinese-Australian artist John Fu Chong. His art will feature ‘landmarks and rural landscapes’ from all over this sun-baked country that John now calls home. It is a labour of love from the last 35 years and focuses on introspection and a unique perspective.
“My life history is in search of spirituality. Spirituality enhances my life. My understanding of life is it
revolves around us. Through the spiritual path one opens gateways for oneself and others, so people
who see my artworks can empathise through their thoughts and feelings. Projecting its beauties,
serenity and pure freshness, art enlightens us to see beyond calamities.” Said the artist.
John is no stranger to Art from the Margins. He has been exhibiting with AFTM since 2013 and uses his platform to express his experiences with mental health, depression and anxiety. John has won awards in Australian and Brunei such as first prize in the 2005 Ablecare Art Competition, Highly Commended from the 2013 AFTM award, and more recently was shortlisted in the inaugural National Biennial Outsider Art Awards in 2019.
This event will coincide with BrisAsia 2020 and runs for a limited time.
