Finding nice or even unique gifts for your loved ones can be difficult. Especially getting so close to Christmas you’re probably finding you don’t quite have the time to think about all these things. Lucky for all you Melbournians we’ve compiled a list of places where you can get great gifts for your loved ones all while shopping at small and independent local businesses.

Windfall Jewellery

Melbourne based designer Lani specialises in handmade jewellery and has been doing so for approximately three years now. She is almost entirely self taught and has an amazing knack for combining great design with beautiful jewels and crystals – or what she likes to all, “uptown elegance with a downtown edge.” She also makes jewellery for both women and men so there is something for any one of the collections she has.

Shop: Collection available on the Windfall Jewellery website.

Metropolis Bookshop

Book shops seem scarce these days don’t they? Well for the bookworms in your life there are still some great places you can find to get them something they’ll get the most out of. Metropolis is a bit hidden, in that you have to climb a couple of flights of stairs before you find it in Curtin House. They have 26 categories you can shop from, whether it’s food to kids, or maybe performing arts to architecture. They also house what’s called “small press” items from local creatives making zines, coffee table books, and other things of the like.

Shop: Level 3, Curtin House, 252 Swanston Street, Melbourne or online.

Kinki Gerlinki

Kinki Gerlinki has been in Melbourne for about 10 years or so, so their label is now quite well recognised, but there’s something about their designs you can’t quite get past. Their designers look to vintage pieces for inspiration, however are completely on trend. It’s hard to go past one of their beautifully tailored jackets or funky designs, my personal favourite is the cat print. This is definitely for those with a funky fashion sense.

Shop: 209 Sydney Rd, Brunswick or online.IMG_5717 IMG_6375 IMG_5937 IMG_8148

Lady Petrova

This is perhaps for the opposite of whoever is shopping in Kinki Gerlinki. Lady Petrova is for the girly girl in your life, with various options from shoes to one off pieces of jewellery and even makeup! Designer and owner of the store, Petrova Hammond, is now definitely well recognised in the Melbourne fashion world, having been a finalist in Project Runway Australia and even having Lana Del Rey showcase one of her dresses in her film clip ‘Ride.’ For anyone loving pink, glitter, unicorns and tule, this will be right up their alley.

Shop: Shop 3, 237 Flinders Lane, Melbourne or online.

Up There

Up There is a store primarily focusing on mens streetwear, and while they house all those well known brands like Adidas Originals and Nike, they also have their own ‘Up There’ designs in the form of shirts and tees. The lovely boys working here also double as fashion bloggers, practicing what they preach and letting you into their own worlds with posts like WOMFT (What’s on my feet today) and updates on how their denim is holding up a couple of months after purchasing.

Shop: Level 1, 15 McKillop Street, Melbourne or online.

Kings of Carnaby

The boys at Kings of Carnaby have perfectly encapsulated past and present Melbourne with their designs, all of which seem to fit perfectly nestled in their Fitzroy home. Think classic rock and roll and modern Melbourne fashionista having a love child, and Kings of Carnaby is what you get. This store is definitely for the more tailored and structured fashionista, however their collections include pieces for both men and women, so shopping for any and all of your loved ones can be done here.

Shop: 338 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

Vice & Velvet

Vice & Velvet is the super organic and sustainably sourced bath and body collection created by Mei here in Melbourne. Having started making soaps and bath products in her teens, her products have flourished into a beautiful collection of niche items in what can only be described as cute and well thought out packaging. This is definitely something for the person who has everything, and being that these are very clean and natural products, they come highly recommended for anyone suffering from allergies or sensitive skin.

Shop: Collection available on Vice & Velvet website
