A lot can happen in ten minutes… and the Short + Sweet Festival is all the proof you need!
The biggest little play festival is back at Brisbane Powerhouse, feeding short attention spans with bite-sized theatre and shot glass cabaret! As the sushi train of the performance world, Short+Sweet serves you more than 30 new performance works by local artists – each one deliciously different from the next. You are able to see up to ten plays or seven cabaret acts at once, and then you are given the opportunity vote for your favourite to send them through to the Gala Finals. You don’t need a big appetite to sample everything on the menu – everything is kept Short+Sweet.
For Saturday’s theatre strand at the Powerhouse, the People’s Choice went to a show called The Housemate Hunt. The hilarious skit followed Steve and Frank on their journey to find a new housemate. Written and directed by Adam Hasa, the show was witty and the humour was impressive. The cast of five worked together well with a standout performance going to the accent confused housemate played by Jordan Schulte. Simplistic yet effective, the set placed you in the dirty lounge room of the two housemates and the actors utilised their own bodies for some fantastic characterisation!
The Judge’s choice went to The Persistance of Men on Me, a delightful dark comedy about online chat rooms. Written and directed by Coleman Grehan, the ten minute show explored the emotions of a gay man as he chatted away online. The show was all about its protagonist played by Nicholas Prior. Dressed a yellow crop top and short shorts, he successfully read out his lines with a diva attitude but a surprising amount of anguish was present behind his words. It was a powerful piece that made the audience think about social media.
The Short + Sweet Festival is an entertaining night out at the theatre. It is a fast-past evening that showcases the very best of local talent. Many of the shows encouraged interaction between the actors and the audience members, a smart move that resulted in a lot fun! A serious mood came over the theatre, as the wine glasses were placed away and the voting slips and pens came out. One thing is for sure, the Gala is going to be one fantastic night!
