Single Review: WAAX Fly Ahead Without You on New Single 'I Am'
With the release of new single ‘I Am’, it’s no stretch to say that WAAX are fast becoming one of Brisbane’s premier punk rock bands – it seems like they’re absolutely everywhere at the moment.
Not only did last year’s single ‘Labrador’ earn WAAX a place in the Triple J Hottest 100, but the band is fresh off an appearance at SXSW and set to embark on tours both at home and internationally before the year ends.
‘I Am’ is the band’s second single of 2019 and acts as a precursor to a yet-to-be-announced debut album that will be “released at the end of August.”
WAAX have written yet another song that doesn’t fit any particular mould – the band write fun music and play a frenetic live show but manage to do away with any possibility of being labelled another ‘party band’ through deeply personal lyrics.
‘I Am’ is about struggling with your identity after a separation, and in the chorus vocalist Maz DeVita proves once again that she is a master at building tension. As the full band kicks in for the song’s chorus her voice almost instantly swings from a pleading vulnerability to an off-the-charts intensity.
“Fly ahead without you, nowhere left to land/I forgot the person that I am,” is the kind of chorus that will remain in your head for days and feels almost purpose-built for singalongs.
Brisbanites can catch WAAX on their headline tour at The Triffid on the 16th of August.
