Southern Soul Strikes Southbank

Southbank’s Grey Street welcomes a new restaurant. Watch out people… South Side Diner delivers delicious Southern-USA swag.
Southbank’s legendary Grey Street is renowned for bestowing the kiss of death unto unlucky restaurant owners. We’ve witnessed restaurant after restaurant collapsing like a house of cards. Yet, one thing is for certain – South Side Diner is here to stay.
The menu bursts with sweet Southern charm, and focuses on American diner classics, including towering burgers, hot grill favourites and tantalising interpretations of mac’n’cheese.
The restaurant takes on the style of the classic American diner which evokes a cheeky and fun ambience. It provides contrast to Grey Street’s abundance of formal dining spots. The inside is home to bright red booths, barstools anda cheery jukebox. The design sports a winning open plan, which is essential to maximise the benefits of Brisbane’s breeziness.
After receiving invaluable guidance from the waitstaff on what to choose, I ordered from the glorious mac’n’cheese menu and decided on the “goat cheese, spinach and peaâ€. I was surprised by the wide selection of vegetarian options when considering the Southern-American disapproval of non-carnivorous folk.
My co-diner chose “Deano’s duck burgerâ€. While we anxiously awaited our meals, we were occupied with guessing the jukebox song, which was playing at a very respectful volume in the background. We were wowed when our impeccably plated meals arrived. The mac’n’cheese was cleverly presented in an iron frypan. (I pitied the waitress who had to carry it).
The food was quite delicious, except I was disappointed by the sauce. The sauce was gluggy and creamy and was lacking in cheesiness depth. It also wasn’t the best value – the serving should have been larger for $14.50. The burger, albeit delicious, also wasn’t fantastic value.
Overall, South Side Diner delivers a new playful edge to Grey Street’s dining precinct. Even if it’s for a delicious milkshake with your loved one after the movies.
