Stylin' Up with Christine Anu

Stylin’ Up with Christine Anu

| On 24, Apr 2015

The legendary Christine Anu is marking the 20th anniversary of Stylin’ Up, one of the most influential albums in Australian music history, with a country wide tour this month.

Arguably Australia’s most successful Indigenous performer, Christine Anu has a long list of accomplishments to be proud of from her illustrious music and acting careers. But five solo albums later, the gem in her crown has to be the ARIA Award winning, platinum album Stylin’ Up.

In a two-hour show, coming to the Brisbane Powerhouse this Wednesday (22nd April) Christine will perform the songs that drew in fans from around the globe and cemented her place as an iconic Australian performer.

At the time Stylin’ Up was released in 1995, it was one of the most influential albums ever released by an Indigenous artist. Featuring a unique blend of Christine’s culturally diverse musical styles with David Bridie’s acoustic flavour. Stylin’ Up  also played an important role in paving the way for many other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contemporary musicians.

Christine shares stories from her humble beginnings in the Torres Strait Islands, on cultural hardship and has always remained candid with her opinions on Indigenous issues in this country. In an interview with George Negus the ‘My Island Home’ singer spoke about efforts into ‘closing the gap’.

“You know, simply, for me, my observation is to embrace what is right under your nose,” Ms Anu said.

“It’s right in your backyard. It’s the Aboriginal culture. There’s nothing scary about it at all. We’re all out there to be… You can ask me a question. Stop me in the street and ask me anything you like. I’ll tell you, and I’m sure others will – we’ve got stories to tell.”

“You can come to the kitchen and eat our tucker. You know, there’s just a lot to be shared. I think it’s just making that connection. It’s not a scary thing. I guess you’re afraid of what you don’t know.”
