The Brunch Diaries: Tall Timber Prahran

I only live just a few minutes from Tall Timber, which has become both a blessing and a curse.  Although I may not be writing this review as a newbie to the café, based on their amazing menu that delivers consistent quality I thought it would only be fair to include them in my collection of brunch reviews.  

Essentially, Tall Timber is a health-conscious brunch enthusiasts’ dream. You can almost guarantee that this yuppie-magnet is going to have a queue on the weekends, especially if it’s sunny. With a quaint courtyard that surrounds a garden of growing vegetables and herbs, it’s definitely worth trying to snag a seat outside. The interior is also stunning with white crisp tiles and small plants of greenery throughout, although small, I think this intimate setting works well for the café. With clatter of coffee cups and the hum of the espresso machine, the inside of the café buzzes between the sounds of the staff doing their thing and the muffled conversations of the patrons catching up over a caffeine fix.

Open until 4:30pm, Tall Timber serves both breakfast and lunch; however, I’ve loved their breakfasts so much that I have yet to venture into the lunch portion of their menu. This is probably the first time I’ve ever managed to convince myself to order something different every time I eat at a favourite restaurant or café, but at Tall Timber I have full faith that everything on their menu is going to be incredible. So far, I have yet to be disappointed.

The Sautéed Kale, Asparagus, Green Beans and Poached Egg dish was delicious and salty without tasting like a heart attack on a plate. The Roast pumpkin bruschetta consisting of poached eggs, feta, hummus, and seed & nut dukkah on a quinoa loaf is another crowd pleaser- healthy, yet filling, and not to mention super tasty. I most recently tried the House Bircher with Poached Pear, which was nice, but I found to be a bit more acidic than I would have liked. However, my favorite dish so far has been a special I got one gloriously sunny Saturday afternoon, consisting of a piece of quinoa loaf topped with smashed peas, a poached egg, a hunk of goats cheese, prosciutto and lemon. Basically, this dish had everything that I could ever want in a breakfast and I wish I could re-live this food moment a million times over.

Sent from the brunch gods themselves, Tall Timber has a fantastic and unique menu that has proven to be consistently delicious. I will admit that sometimes the service can be on the slower side, but hey, this is understandable when they’ve got a full house and there’s a line of people eager to also get a table. Despite any long wait times I’ve experienced, the staff has always been really lovely so this doesn’t really bother me. All in all, Tall Timber is a must-try for all Melbourne foodies- especially those that enjoy their eggs served with a twist!
