The Good Doctor Calls

The Villanova Players, one of the city’s oldest community theatre troupes, have brought Broadway to Brisbane with their latest production by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Neil Simon.
The Good Doctor his a comedic exploration into the mind and world of Russian author Anton Chekhov. The play is presented through a series of ‘mini acts’ narrated by a gentleman assumed to be Chekhov. The remaining cast members assume several personas throughout the evening’s performance: a meek governess becomes a seduced, married woman.
It is worth remembering that the The Good Doctor is an ammatuer theatre production driven everyday people with a simple passion for performing. And to a certain extent, it shows. The set is not elaborate, nor are the character portrayals terribly nuanced. The play too, is somewhat lengthy for an 8pm start.
Nonetheless, The Good Doctor is a pleasant way to spend an evening in the company of friends. The humour is amusing and will be enjoyed by most if the uproarious laughter coming from the audience on opening night is any sign.Â
As Chekhov himself would not doubt agree: laughter is the best medicine. Time for your daily dose?
