October is undoubtedly the scariest, greatest time of the year. What with Halloween, pumpkin-spiced lattes and adorable, terrifying black cats running through the streets. Its also the time of year when some of our most haunting fantasies come to life on the silver screen. So, as a homage to these spine-tingling cinematic nightmares, we have put together a list of the top horror films you need to include in your halloween movie marathon.
*warning: some films are insanely violent and should not be viewed if you are scared easily or have a dislike for blood and gore.
This is one truly horrifying film. The story revolves around a down-and-out writer who stumbles upon super-8 home videos dating back to the 1960’s. What he finds in the videos leads him to the discovery of a serial-killing entity which preys on children and comes to life upon seeing its face. Sinister was directed by Scott Derickson and stars Ethan Hawke.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Known as the mother of all found-footage horror films, The Blair Witch Project is a film which will scare you out of camping for the rest of your life. Three students travel into the woods to document the legend of the Blair Witch, their footage was found a year after they mysteriously disappeared.
Evil Dead (2013)
If you’re into seriously horrific horror films, then this is the one for you. The typical group of friends in a cabin in the woods with one major difference… the killer is inside. Evil Dead is full of gore and unspeakable violence which makes this one of the most savage horror films of all time.

It Follows (2015)
An Indie horror film that pays tribute to the classic scary movies of the 70’s and 80’s. It Follows features stunning cinematography through wide shots and unexpected jump scares. What sets it apart is the build up of terror which keeps you clutching onto your blankie the entire length of the film. If you have sex… you will die.
The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Once there, bad things happen. All elements controlled by a non-spiritual outside force that sends their greatest nightmares to kill them. The Cabin In The Woods makes you think again about the cliched horror films we’re all used to.
The Ring (2002)
A video tape which starts the countdown until your imminent death in seven days. An investigative journalist must uncover the truth behind the video tape after her son watches the tape so she can save him from his untimely end. A different type of film which explores a new side of horror that is equally as haunting.
The film which gave Jamie Lee Curtis her ‘scream queen’ status is the tale of Michael Myers who murdered his sister when he was younger. After being institutionalised for 15 years, he escapes to his hometown to prey on the teens of the town. Halloween is the essential classic and has earned its rightful place as one of the original horror films.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
1, 2, He’s coming for you. 3, 4, better lock your door. 5, 6 grab your crucifix. 7, 8, gonna stay up late. 9, 10, never sleep again. Need I say more?
The Poltergeist (1982)
They’re here! What could be more disturbing than a group of ghosts who take the form of your worst fear? The Poltergeist is the reason you check your closet before you go to bed at night. A classic horror film which created a twisted and demented new world of sinister films.
A french film which tells the story of a pregnant woman whose husband is killed in a car accident. Four months after his death, the expectant mother is terrorised by a deranged woman who wants her baby. Filled with graphic violence and traumatic scenes of full-on panic, Inside is cause for mental scarring.
The Loved Ones (2009)
Australia’s very own messed-up horror. As if Australia wasn’t scary enough, am I right? The Loved Ones is reminiscent of Misery meets Carrie meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with its scenes of torture and grim torment. Don’t be fooled by its light comedy, this movie is nightmarish.
Get ready to hide under the covers and never come out. Enjoy some of the most terrifying films of all time. Happy Halloween.
