Trend Report: Mules

You can thank Celine designer Phoebe Philo for the revival of the ‘ugly sandal’. Birkenstocks, pool slides and Addidas slippers have charged off the runway and onto the feet of everyone brave enough to give the trend a try. The next big shoe trend, the mule, is taking ugliness to the next level. It begs the question, how ugly is too ugly?
The word mule itself conjures unpleasant images; what exactly is a mule?  A donkey? Someone involved in a drug cartel? Nope! In broad terms, the mule is kinda like a clog; a backless shoe with a chunky heel.
The mule was as synonymous with the 90’s as crop tops and the Spice Girls. Everyone from Buffy to SJP wore these unflattering grandma shoes with pride.
Thankfully the humble mule has been given a contemporary twist. The 2014 model is architectural, textural, embellished, cut out or patterned. The style has been revived from it’s horror days into chic statement piece that you will covet this spring. While I’m personally still hesitant to give this trend a try, they are growing on me. Ugly is no limit when it comes to fashion!
