UQ cult film screening: The Room

UQ cult film screening: The Room

| On 07, Oct 2013

So bad it’s good.

The University of Queensland’s Schonell theatre is playing host to some very interesting cinema this month, and first up is Tommy Wiseau’s accidental cult masterpiece, The Room.

If you’ve never seen or heard of The Room, let me take a moment to indulge you.

The Room was the brainchild of eccentric artist, Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, directed and starred in the film, which screened to a small Los Angeles audience in 2003.

The Room is simply indescribable. I have never encountered a movie with more glaring plot holes, shoddy acting, and obscure one-liners like, “Leave your stupid comments in your pocket.”

While Tommy now claims that his movie is a black comedy and not, ‘a film with the passion of Tennessee Williams’, Wiseau owes much of his success to The Room’s cult status as one of the worst dramas ever made.

The wheels of The Room’s infamy were set in motion from the moment patrons demanded their money back from the 2003 premiere – word got around, and by 2009 The Room was showing to sold-out theatres of up to 1000 people across America, Britain and Australia.

How does a film so bad gain a cult following amounting to dolls, a video game and even its own viewing guide?

The beauty of The Room lies in the audience’s ability to embrace the weirdness and laugh along with the travesty on screen.

In a similar fashion to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, viewers are encouraged to throw spoons at key points, yell commentary, and even sing along – The Room is truly an interactive movie experience.

I wish I could tell you what The Room is actually about, but even after two viewings, and some strenuous mental activity, I still don’t know. Perhaps it’s better that way.

What I do know however, is that if you’re free this Wednesday and in need of a good laugh, bring your spoons and an open mind to the Schonell Theatre.

I promise you, it’s worth it.
