UQ’s Latin American Film Festival: Free and For Adults Only

UQ’s Latin American Film Festival: Free and For Adults Only

| On 06, Oct 2016

This week foreign film lovers can enjoy five days of free fun at the University of Queensland’s 10th Annual Latin American Film Festival.

The festival will be screening thirteen films, originating from thirteen different South American countries. Opening night, Wednesday 5th October, screened Malacrianza (The Crow’s Nest). The 70-minute drama by Arturo Menéndez follows a humble piñata salesman’s brush with blackmail in El Salvador.

This festival of Latin American cinema is hosted by UQ’s School of Languages and Cultures, and is for adults only, as all films are rated R18+.

Each year a Latin American Embassy in Canberra supports the event by selecting the films to be screened. The El Salvadoran Embassy has made the selection for this year’s film festival.

UQ’s event coordinator, Kellie Colahan said, “It is a great opportunity to bring together the UQ and wider Brisbane community to view a sample of the creative best of Latin American cinema.”

“This year we are also proud to be able to host the world premiere of a short film created by a group of international students from Latin America,” Ms Colahan said.

On Saturday you can catch Anna Muylaert’s The Second Mother – winner of last year’s Special Jury Prize for dramatic acting at the Sundance Film Festival. The Second Mother explores the family dynamic and social class when a live-in housekeeper’s daughter comes to stay, upsetting the status quo.

The Guatemalan film La Bodega will close the film festival on Sunday afternoon. The film is a gripping tale of the ricocheting consequences of violence. After gang members sexually assault his sister, Jacobo and his friend try to get some kind of revenge by kidnapping and torturing a random gang member.

With plenty more films to see at UQ’s Latin American Festival, be sure to check out the festival overview for more details. All films screened will be either in Spanish or Portuguese, with English subtitles.
