Watch & Learn: BIGSOUND 2015

Watch & Learn: BIGSOUND 2015

| On 04, Aug 2015

Australia’s Eastern Coast remains decidedly unapologetic about the amount of music festivals it receives every year, smugly flaunting an array of annual events and headliners while quietly convincing any A-Lister’s within earshot that the Perth Arena is actually a larger than average mud-hut on stilts.

A step away from the mud splattered Splendour in the Grass, 2015’s BIGSOUND event will once again place a huge emphasis on the mechanics of a dynamic Australian music industry, one which remains the 6th largest in the world – not bad for an island of 24 million residents.
While conference and media events shall take up the daylight for the most part, the evenings will see Bigsound Live take to the various stages scattered around Fortitude Valley.

The festival shall once again play host to a series of industry speakers – representatives from Capitol Records and I OH YOU no doubt providing their two cents, while the high-profile appearance of music legend and activist Peter Garrett has sparked speculation of whether Midnight Oil may temporarily reform for a period – although this may be unlikely.

September 9-11 will squeeze a staggering 150 artists into a 48 hour period, fifteen venues within the Fortitude Valley precinct to test to the very limits punter’s ability to jog from The Zoo to Woolly Mammoth whilst juggling a mid-evening cheeseburger and paper schedule.

Previously the nursing grounds of artists such as Courtney Barnett and Seth Sentry, it will be interesting indeed to sample the smaller stages as acts like Hellions and The Goon Saxx do their best to draw the crowds in the festivals’s microcosm atmosphere.

For those thinking of visiting the conference rooms of the Judith Wright Centre this year, there will be no doubt plenty to discuss; with the recent IFPI music report detailing that an estimated 41 million people now pay for streaming services, and that digital music revenue now equals that of physical music revenues, perhaps an unexpected result for a generation that firmly deny the existence of the tape cassette.
