What's on: galleries and exhibits in Brisbane
Sophie Blackshaw | On 17, Feb 2014
If you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot going on right in even the smallest of galleries around Brisbane.
Maybe it’s the time of year – what with semester one about to commence, summer drawing to its official close – or something else, but there’s no denying the quantity, and quality of art dying to be seen and pondered in a gallery near you.
Given there is so much to see, you might want to do a little research of your own, but I’ve listed a few galleries and exhibits here that are within 2-3km of the city. Could it be any easier?
Level Project Space: Anastasia Booth – Means are the Ends: The Command Issue, February 12-23, Edward St, Brisbane
Feminine desire and sexuality is a popular topic, though one that still sees most cringe at the idea of speaking of it out loud. Or in public.
But you don’t have to talk in an art gallery! So head along to Anastasia Booth’s sculptural and video exhibition on the problematic relationship between desire and practice before it’s gone.
Lethbridge Gallery: Bulletproof Kiss by Brett Lethbridge, February 22 – March 8, 136 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington
Bulletproof Kiss is the second round of artist Brett Lethbridge’s pop-inspired paintings designed to portray the ‘spirit of exploration’ that he and his wife are experiencing in the United States right now. And not just any part of America, but the south, which is, in many ways, a country of its own.
Think bold colours.
Spiro Grace Art Rooms: Presence/Absence, February 21 – March 1, 255 Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill
With art from Brisbane artists Athena Thebus, Chris Bennie, Clark Beaumont, Louise Bennet and Pirrin Francis, Presence/Absence takes a look at the artist’s body within their work, emphasizing the variations between approaches and how they can be viewed.
If you like local, go.
Jugglers Art Space: Linear, February 21 at 6pm, 103 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley
This event features artworks from Alice Weitherhal, Joseph Gracia, KNOCK, Matt Lockwood, and Zoe Mary. Everything from sculptures to collaborations to drawings will be there to see, though of what specifically is hard to say.
All you really need to know is that there’s going to be wine.
